"Our May meeting was not as well attended by members due to holidays and sickness but new visitors boosted the numbers who were fascinated by the talk on "Thatching" by David Wood a Master Thatcher from Handsacre who is the only Thatcher in Staffordshire. David, originally from Derbyshire was an inquisitive 13 year old paperboy who was looking over the boards of a lorry owned by George The Thatcher who said the material was Reed for thatching who asked David if he wanted a job during the school holidays thatching a cottage roof. From then on David knew it would be his life's-work. He brought a sample scaled thatched roof and some historic tools for us to view, some of which are still used today. He gave an insight into the country cottages and the demise of thatched roofs due mainly to cost, although nowadays the thatch lasts 20-25 years as opposed to 3-4 years 100 years ago. He had thatched a property in Gnosall and three cottages in Church Eaton. Afterwards we were able view the display and also purchase his thatched bird houses and tables which is a business he is hoping to continue when he gets too old to climb onto roofs!
